CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Toph Beifong
Character Canon: Avatar: The Last Airbender

History: Here

AU History: The Beifong family is an upper class family of Union though the last two generations haven’t have any Enlightened. The current patriarch is Lao Beifong, a minor councilman who is known for his pride and the ease with which he uses slightly less than straightforward methods to get what he wants or avenge his damaged pride. His wife, Poppy, is a delicate thing though still isn’t someone you want to mess with.

The birth of Toph brought both sorrow and joy to the Beifongs. Toph was born blind and for the first years of her life her parents were certain that meant she was largely worthless beyond marrying off to some rich son. There could be no siblings, either, as the pregnancy had been difficult on Poppy and it was not recommended that she have more children. They swore to love and protect Toph to the best of their abilities.

When Toph was about four, a Sandshrew that was bonded to one of her neighbors wandered across the path of the little girl (who had gotten separated from her nanny and was crying). Rather than leaving or going to find her nanny, the Sandshrew instead settled down to play with Toph. By the time Toph was found, she had a new friend and a new ability—the Sandshrew had taught Toph that she could use the ground to see. Toph was an Enlightened with a Ground typing.

While this was great news for the Beifongs, it wasn’t the best for poor Toph. Where most parents would take her abilities as a sign that their daughter was blessed and that her blindness was perhaps a sacrifice for those abilities, the Beifongs largely ignored her abilities. Toph needed to be protected despite her Enlightened status. She was still blind, after all, and no seismic sense would fix that.

As Toph grew up, this began to grate on her. Her parents, thankfully, allowed her to keep playin with her Sandshrew friend (named Bandit) and introduced her to a Tympole named Lin when she turned ten (Tympoles evolve into Water/Ground, after all, and that is a very good defensive type) but they were impossibly strict and protective. She never went to the public schools, was barely allowed to train, and was treated like as if she were made of glass. Toph was stubborn and eager to do something--she was Enlightened, after all, and it wasn’t fair that everyone else was allowed to do things while she had to stay home. As she grew up, Toph began to sneak out of the estate (by way of Bandit’s tunnels) and found places away from everyone else to train properly. Her parents never found out about her training until one day, shortly after Toph turned thirteen, an older Enlightened showed up at their door with Toph and her Pokémon in tow. The man—Bandit’s trainer—explained that he had seen Toph training with Bandit and that her parents ought to be ashamed at keeping such a talented young Enlightened locked away when there was so much she could be doing instead. Her parents protested, claiming that their daughter was a weak thing; in response, Toph demonstrated just how strong she really was by stomping and describing in detail the layout of the room—down to the cracks in the wall they were trying to hide. Unable to deny it any longer, the Beifongs agreed to let Toph stop her studies and do whatever it was she wanted provided that she agree to do a daily check in. Bandit, however, would not go with Toph as he was bonded to the older Enlightened. Bidding everyone farewell, Toph set off.

She stopped checking in two weeks after being let free. Her calls home just put her in a bad mood and she was enjoying herself far too much. She has no idea what she wants to do, but she’s doing it anyway.

Canon Personality: Toph is a very stubborn, prideful girl. She used to be vehemently against anyone helping her at all, taking this as pity for her blindness. However, time with the Gaang has tempered this, and now she’s willing to accept help from people she respects. She still doesn’t take insults or insinuations that, as a blind girl, she can’t function like a normal person, and has a habit of attempting to prove the person wrong, only to inadvertently prove them right. (For example, when told she couldn’t help hang posters, she took one, pasted it on backwards, and went, “It’s upside-down, isn’t it?”) She loves being blind, as it’s helped her develop her own style of earthbending and metalbending, a previously unheard of bending form that was only possible because Toph was banging against a metal wall and could sense the bits of unrefined earth in the metal.

Her inability to accept help has made it difficult for Toph to connect with people in the past. She tends to want to do things herself and despite working around her disability for the most part, she’s still human and humans can’t do everything by themselves. She’s stronger when she works with other people, but it takes a while for her to get to that point. She eventually does, of course, though even then she’s leading them rather than follow someone else. Obedience does not come easy to Toph, and you had best be able to back up those orders you’re giving her if you want her to even try.

Raised as a young noble, Toph is perfectly capable of handling other nobles and behaving like one. That doesn’t mean she does. She would much rather run around barefoot (this is in part because that’s how she sees) than sit inside and take tea. That doesn’t mean she’s above abusing her family name if it’ll help her friends, but she really doesn’t like being thought of as “the Beifong girl”. She’s Toph. Toph’s personal hygiene is also somewhat lacking, as she usually is covered in a ‘healthy coating of earth’, tends to burp a lot, and isn’t too terribly fond of washing the dirt off. She will when it gets ridiculous, and it’s not as if she likes being filthy. She just likes dirt.

Toph is a quick learner, and is quick to adapt to a new situation. On multiple occasions, she’s taken a bad situation (getting conned, being blind in the sand) and turned it into a situation benefiting herself and her friends (conning the con man with earthbending, learning sandbending). Her usual way of handling a problem she can’t turn to her benefit is to face it head on and just charge through; however, this doesn’t always work and when it doesn’t, Toph is not the happiest of people. And when Toph’s not happy, the snark comes out. She is an expert trash-talker and smartmouth, and she’s not exactly keen on fluffy feelings. She’s more tsun than dere, and punches as a sign of affection.

Being blind, Toph doesn’t worry too much about how she looks, as long as she looks presentable. It does affect her, though, when others insult her looks, since how can she respond to that? When she can respond to someone else’s taunts, Toph is a master snarker and gives mildly derogatory nicknames to everyone she meets. If she’s a friend, she means it affectionately. Honestly. She’s a loyal friend, after all, and would never insult her friends. Outright, at least. She’s good with sarcastic jokes, though, like when people forget she’s blind. Toph is generally carefree, disliking any rules she deems ‘stupid’ and always wanting to break them.

AU Deviation: As Toph never snuck out to a fighting ring, she’s not as likely to provoke someone into a fight to show off. She’s still a bit of a show off, but that comes from being thirteen and knowing that her seismic sense is unique (so far, anyway).

As Bandit was her only friend, Toph also has some more Sandshrew-like traits though this does also come from her forced isolation. She’s not too keen on meeting strangers and would much rather simply focus on her Pokémon and her abilities alone than in a group. She’s not even all that likely to want new Pokémon. She’s still perfectly friendly, once you get to know her, and she’ll nickname everyone like her canon counterpart, but it takes a lot more to get under her hard shell than it did in canon.

She’s also a bit more connected to the creatures of the world than Toph appears to be in canon. This is partially because of the setting and partially because her only friends were Bandit and Lin (and now Shi).

Canon Abilities:“Bending” is the ability to manipulate one of the four classical elements (earth, water, air, and fire). Toph, in canon, is considered the most powerful earthbender in the world, having developed not only a new style of earthbending but also discovering metalbending. Through her earth- and metalbending, Toph was granted the ability of seismic sense. This allows her to use the vibrations in the earth made by footsteps to sense what is going on around her in three hundred and sixty degrees for several feet, and anything abnormal will get her attention; this works on metal as well. Toph also has some skill in “sandbending”, a branch of earthbending used by desert dwellers. Toph’s earthbending allows her to hear the heartbeats of other people, allowing her to tell when they’re lying.

Aside from that, Toph also has very good hearing to compensate for her lack of sight and her sense of touch is also particularly refined.

Enlightened Abilities: Toph, at start, is a simple Ground-type with the Master of Training ability. I chose this ability as much of Toph’s canon revolves around her teaching someone, be it Aang, her students, the entire police force, whatever. When she evolves, however, she will gain a Steel typing.

Type Abilities

Her base ability is the seismic sense that allows her to see. It isn’t nearly as strong as it is in canon, allowing her only to see clearly in a circle that’s about six feet in diameter on either side, though she can pick up faint vibrations and shapes nine feet away. This only works on ground at this stage and she must be barefoot. Appearance-wise, she looks perfectly normal though she has a constant layer of dirt on her that no one’s quite sure about. It’s just dirt; Toph doesn’t like feeling scrubbed clean. When she’s angry she risks causing small earthquakes that won’t cause any real damage beyond knocking things off shelves, though this will gradually get stronger.

When she evolves the first time at level sixteen, Toph will gain her Steel typing and her seismic sense will grow to allow her to see on metal with the same distance limitations. That layer of dirt is now permanent, though, and small metal designs will appear on her temple, wrists, and ankles. Her earthquakes are much stronger now, though still not too dangerous. She also now has something similar to Bullet Punch in that her punches feel like you were just hit by a metal brick if she’s not careful.

Her final evolution at level thirty-six grants her a twelve-foot circle of clear sense (fifteen feet of awareness in general) and a sort of armor on her legs, back, and arms that grew from the layer of dirt in her previous evolution. The metal designs now go all over her body as well though more for looks than anything else. Her earthquakes can cause some damage now and her punches still hurt. She can also now cause a sandstorm around her opponent for three minutes.

At no point will her canon ability as a human lie detector be brought in.

Starter Pokémon: She starts with a level six Tympole (Lin) and a level five Murkrow (Shi) that would not leave her alone once Toph disturbed her nest.

Notes/Special Considerations: At some point, I may want to have Lao start searching for his daughter but that will be much later.

SAMPLES

-What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?

Without Pokémon, I wouldn’t know anything about anything. They’re a huge part of my life and I’ll hurt you if you so much as think about hurting Lin or Shi. [To herself:] Even if Shi’s annoying as heck.

-What do you feel your role in Union is?

[The flattest look from a blind girl in the history of the world. Did she seriously just get asked that question? Seriously?]

I’m thirteen. Don’t you think I should maybe learn about the city first? Let me explore and stuff before you ask me the heavy questions, geez.

-What do you seek for humanity’s future?>

[It is so very clear that Toph thinks you are an idiot, interviewer]

Do you ask all the kids these kinds of questions and expect actual answers? I literally have not been outside my parents’ house for more than a week my entire life and you want me to talk about humanity?

[She just snorts]

-What does the story of the Savior mean to you?

[Her voice is so very dry]

That the people in the past were stupid enough to get the gods angry. Who even does that?

-What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?

[Toph shrugs]

Strength. Not just physical strength either, I mean hello, I bonded with a Tympole and a Murkrow. But Lin’s stubborn and loyal and doesn’t back down while Shi’s also stubborn as heck and really smart for an annoying bird. I know both of them have it in them to be more and I am going to bring it out of them no matter what. Are we done here yet?

-What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?

The same traits I look for in Pokémon. I don’t see why they should be any different.

-The gods of old have returned. How would you be judged if you were chosen as a representative of humanity?

If someone picked a thirteen year old kid to represent humanity, they deserve whatever judgment the gods make. I mean, I’m pretty awesome but come on.

-A human has attacked a wild Pokémon who retaliates in defense. How do you respond and whom do you defend?

Depends. Was the human feeling threatened or did they just decide to be a jerk? If they felt threatened, I’ll step in and try to help either calm them down if they over reacted or chase the Pokémon off if they didn’t. If they were being a jerk, I am totally up for kicking their butt.

-When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why?

Is it trying to kill me? Because if it’s trying to kill me all bets are off. If it’s not…I dunno. Research is boring, though, so I guess I’ll try to bond with it. If it’s that powerful already, I want to try and see if I can make it more powerful in some way. Besides, maybe it’ll help make me stronger, too.

-What do you do to ensure we never again awaken the wrath of the gods upon humanity?

Uh, use my brain? [She starts counting off on her fingers] I don’t purposely piss off Pokémon, I don’t try and force them to do things they don’t want to do unless it’s for their own good like, y’know, training, I try not to upset the people I deal with…common sense stuff, really.

-What area do you seek to explore? The peaceful forest, in search of new, previously overlooked discoveries; the uncharted caves, in search of the unknown; or the wildest of mountain terrain, in search of danger, adventure, and thrills?

[She laughs]

The mountains, definitely. I mean, I’ve got no problems in caves or anything but come on! The whole point of getting out of my parent’s house is to, y’know, explore? See the world? Have fun? And help out the city too, blah blah blah, but that goes without saying. I can have way more fun in a dangerous mountain than a musty old cave.
